Why You Can't Trust Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies
Now I know this is blasphemy in the corner of movie reviewers, but it's true, you really can't always trust the Rotten Tomatoes website to bring you the best of the best of Netflix streaming.
Now that's not to say that Rotten Tomatoes doesn't get it right a lot of the time. I would say on average that the Rotten Tomatoes rating system can provide you with a decent review of a movie about 60% of the time. Considering how hard it is to find a good movie on Netflix these days, I would say those odds actually aren't all that bad. The Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings can be good because they are combined movie ratings from a large group of people. That way you can get a majority vote for the best Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies.
The first thing to decipher on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system is the audience ratings versus the Tomatometer. I have found that the Tomatometer is at least a little bit better at rating movies, being that it is scored by an approved reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes. If you have to go with one, definitely go with the Tomatometer. I can't even begin to tell you how off the audience scores always are.
In my quest to bring you the best of Netflix streaming, I once thought that the Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings were the perfect place to start. That is until I realized that the movie ratings they have on Rotten Tomatoes were horrible for some of the best movies on Netflix. Here is a list of some of the best movies on Netflix that scored low on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system. After seeing these movies, you might just lose faith in some of the Rotten Tomatoes Netflix choices they have.
The Eyes of My Mother: 65% (update: Rotten Tomatoes finally raised their rating to 75%! Maybe there's hope for them yet!)
The Rotten Tomatoes rating system has decided to score The Eyes of My Mother at a score of 65% which is totally beyond me. I suppose it's fair to say that The Eyes of My Mother is not for every type of person out there, but if you like dark, strange, and twisted movies, this movie is for you! The rating of The Eyes of My Mother is by far the worst rating for Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies I've seen in awhile. I found this movie to be one of the most original films on Netflix I had seen in years. A few reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings said this movie was "Deeply disturbing" and "pompous torture porn". Call me crazy, but those are the exact movies I want to see on the Rotten Tomatoes top 100 movie list. Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies should strive to be a lot more like The Eyes of My Mother.
Odd Thomas: 36%
Shame on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system for giving Odd Thomas a review score of 36%! I'm not going to say that Odd Thomas should win an Oscar or anything, but it certainly deserves a 70% score at the very least. There is a lot of action in Odd Thomas to keep you entertained the whole time. I have seen plenty of sci-fi Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies that got way higher scores on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system and weren't even half as much fun to watch as Odd Thomas. Odd Thomas is a perfect movie to watch on those days when you have nothing to do and are just looking for some mindless entertainment. Plus Willem Dafoe is in it too! Has he ever had a bad performance in a movie? I can't even think of one. Give Odd Thomas a try tonight!
Take Me 60% (update: Rotten Tomatoes raised their rating to 68%! Finally some progress!)
Take Me is the story of a man who starts a kidnap for hire business to cure people of their bad habits. As for the 60% on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system, I don't know what to tell you. Pat Healy is coming up with some great ideas for his movies. Few Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies have the originality or the fun and quirky plots he brings to the screen every year. As far as movie ratings go, I think Take Me should be at least a 70% on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system. They clearly got it wrong for this Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movie. Taylor Schilling is in her craziest role yet and this one will keep you guessing until the end.
Silent Hill: 30%
Silent Hill is one of the best video game adaptations I've ever seen. And no, you don't have to be a video game super nerd to know that. But on the small chance that you did play the video game, you will come to realize that Silent Hill was put together perfectly for the video game genre of movies. I really don't think that the reason the Rotten Tomatoes rating system got this wrong is because they never played the video game. I think they got the rating of Silent Hill wrong because they didn't expect what they got. Silent Hill is a very dark movie with more than a few scenes people might call disturbing. My guess is that the reviewers just weren't expecting all the blood they got and they decided to punish the movie for it.
VHS 2: 65%
VHS 2 was a great movie that outdid the original. It's very rare that you see the sequel being done better than the original, so I was presently surprised with VHS 2. That is until you check the rating of 65% on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system for this movie. I have said it before, and I will say it again, VHS 2 has the most original collection of horror flick short films I have ever seen. Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies don't compare to VHS 2 when it comes to the short film genre. I think that VHS 2 just scared some people away from giving it the Rotten Tomatoes movie rating is deserved. If you have the time, make sure to disregard this movie rating on Rotten Tomatoes and watch this movie tonight.
As you can see, there are plenty of movies that have received pretty low scores on the Rotten Tomatoes rating system. For whatever reason, sometimes they just get it wrong when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies. I don't want to completely bash Rotten Tomatoes and say that it's a useless site or anything. In fact, I still use it every once in awhile to look up movies before I take the time to watch them. All I want to do is point out that just because some of the Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings are bad, it doesn't mean that it's the absolute truth. Trust me, I wish it were that easy to find good movies on Netflix! All I'm saying is that you should get a second opinion from time to time and know that some of the Rotten Tomatoes Netflix movies that got bad reviews are great movies on Netflix that are definitely worth watching.
