Weird Movies on Netflix
Welcome folks, today we bring you the weirdest movies on my Netflix list. There actually is ton to choose from so I'll try my best to narrow it down to just a handful. I personally think that weird movies are great. I love sitting back and staring at the screen like "What.. the.. hell." Everyone likes originality, right? Today, we'll talk about every version of weird movies I have on my Netflix list, be it creepy weird, funny weird, or just downright disturbingly weird. Ok, here we go, I promise some of these will blow you away with their weirdness!
John Dies at the End
Oh. So he dies at the end. Maybe we should skip this one? Nope! John Dies at the End is one of those weird, campy movies that just bounce around all over the place. If you went simply by the reviews of the "big wigs" of the industry you'd definitely stay clear of this one. John Dies at the End has no great promise of performances that will shake you to the core. What it does have is blood, gore, language, nudity and violence; and those are good for something at the very least, right!? Trust me, don't listen to the naysayers, they're just too uptight to enjoy the ride of drifting across time and dimensions or even preventing an otherworldly invasion. What John Dies at the End brings is creativity. This type of creativity goes a long way (in space and time!) and keeps the audience scratching their heads at what they're seeing. For the people out there that need the reassurance that their time won't be wasted, Paul Giamatti is in it, and I'm pretty sure we can all agree that he's a great actor.
The Hallows
The Hallows is absolutely a strange movie. Everything starts off seemingly ok, but towards the second half, right when you feel like things might be slowing down, someone throws a bucket of water in your face, metaphorically speaking. I remember thinking that the story was getting a little tedious, but a curve ball comes flying at you the second you take your eyes off it. The first thing you notice about The Hallows is the cool Irish countryside. You get to learn about some Irish urban legends and all that creepy stuff too. It's really one thing to have a monster movie, it's a whole other thing to go the route The Hallows does. There is a whole lot of movies on Netflix that follow the same pattern as every other horror, and you might just think The Hallows does the same thing. But you just wait and see what happens next.
The Eyes of My Mother
I just get excited talking about The Eyes of My Mother! I think it might have been the easiest movie to add to my Netflix movie list. I loved it. It is so damn weird, there's no way you can pass this one up. One of the main reasons I enjoyed it so much was because it got so much negative feedback about the "grotesqueness" and how "disturbing" it is. I even lost a few subscribers. And although those subscribers will be missed, I can't help but enjoy the brutally twisted ones like The Eyes of My Mother. Again, this is another movie that didn't get great reviews, for whatever reason, but if you're looking for a very dark, weird, maybe "sick" type of movie, this is the one for you. What makes the characters so weird in this flick is that they seem so devoid of all emotion or even human understanding. They just live singular lives without really caring for the needs of anyone but themselves.
Baskin
Ok ok, I won't go off like I usually do about Baskin, but you have to admit, it deserves to be on this list. I remember watching Baskin and being totally caught off guard. Talk about weird! I mean weird like the Twilight Zone weird. It's almost like you're a character that's actually in the movie. You don't realize where you are in Baskin until it's too late. By then, they've dug their claws in and you aren't going anywhere. It's been called one of the most grotesque movies on Netflix so that will usually always make the weird movies on Netflix list, but there's a lot more to Baskin than that. There's a lot of dreamlike scenes that will keep you entertained and confused at the same time. You know that feeling of being in a nightmare, then waking up in your dream and still being in the nightmare? Everything starts to kind of feel like that.
Housebound
If you like weird, I can't imagine a single person not liking Housebound. My Netflix movies list was graced by Housebound in 2014 and I'm pleased to say it is still on Netflix streaming movies today. Housebound is a story about a woman who is forced to be on home arrest at her childhood home. That description is accurate, but I feel like that's about 5% of the actual story. Housebound is a completely unpredictable movie that's part haunting and part murder mystery. What makes it so great is that it easily goes back and forth from the horror genre to the comedy genre. I don't know about you, but I think that's pretty hard to pull off these days without the story being completely ridiculous and all over the place. Well hey, maybe it is a little ridiculous, but it's all in good fun so it doesn't even matter. Housebound actually got the good reviews it deserves, so there's no need for me to convince you to check it out.
Night Watch
Ok, to be fair, Russian movies in general are just weird. I mean they are seriously weird. I've actually only added one Russian movie to my Netflix list since I started it. It has to be some kind of cultural difference but I've seen Russian movies that literally show people walking down the sidewalk for 25 minutes straight (I timed it). Now not only is that horrible to have to sit through, it's just weird that a director would think I would ever want to. I'm going to go ahead and say that I guarantee you have never seen a movie quite like Night Watch. That is unless you've seen the sequel, Day Watch. Then you at least know what I'm talking about. Oh and don't worry, I won't ask you to sit through 45 minutes of film before it actually fits into the weird genre. This one won't take too long. I mean, unless you don't consider a grandma mixing blood, vodka, and lemonade, and making a kid take a shot of it weird. But hey, it's his own blood, so at least there's that. Not weird enough for you? Oh you just wait for the horrifying doll spider that comes to life after her demon chant. Need I say more?
So there you have it. I can't fake this stuff even if I wanted to. These movies are absolutely some of thee weirdest movies on Netflix I have ever seen. Even though all of these are good movies on Netflix, just being weird alone is almost enough to sit through a movie. Weird is almost synonymous with good in my book these days, because it means that they were at least original. My Netflix list wouldn't be complete without them. I hoped you enjoy these reviews and if you're looking for more weird ones in the future, feel free to sign up for my newsletter! You know, since I don't appeal to the non-weird loving crowd.
Enjoy!
