The Best Netflix Original Movies Right Now

After a slow start, Netflix Original movies have really come into their own. When they first started I really didn't think much of them. Then all of the sudden, Netflix really focused on producing quality movies through Netflix Originals.

Unfortunately, that's when things started to take a turn for the worst. After a few successful Netflix Original movies, it seems as though Netflix has decided to put the "Netflix Original" stamp on a whole bunch of movies that don't have much quality. When they first started the projects, I was quick to add them to my movie list, but now, not so much.

Netflix Original movies have really gone downhill lately. I'm not sure if they are just making money off of having that red Netflix sign pop up before every movie, or if they really think they are producing quality. Whatever the reason may be, there is a serious lack of good movies from Netflix Originals right now.

Thankfully, we do still have some great movies we can attribute to Netflix Originals. The movies below are all very high-quality films and well worth the watch. Pick one of the options below and know that your night won't be wasted tonight.

Beasts of No Nation

Beasts of No Nation is one of the first and one of the best Netflix Original movies. I'm sure you've heard of it by now, as it's been out for awhile, but if you haven't, you need to watch it tonight. Few Netflix o Original films can compete with Beasts of No Nation because it is such a raw and gripping film about the atrocities of civil wars in Africa. With Beasts of No Nation you get a first-hand glimpse into how child soldiers are forced into joining rebel groups and fight against the government. This Netflix Original movie will show you that no matter who you are, you can become a victim of your surroundings just like the boy in this movie. It's not the most uplifting story, but if you are in the mood for a serious Netflix drama with a story that needs to be told, choose Beasts of No Nation tonight.

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore really hit the ground running when it came out this year. I'd say it is the best Netflix Originals 2017. After a burglary, a woman and her friend go on the search for the thieves which ultimately takes them down a dark path. And when I say dark, I mean a dark path. As far as Netflix Original movies go, this is one of the darkest movies I've seen them make yet. Don't let the trailers fool you. There are a lot of funny scenes, but the best aspect of I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore is that you won't see a lot of things coming. I really feel like this is a movie we can all relate too. At some point in everyone's life, you start to feel fed up with the people around you or the place you are in life. Most people don't do much about it, but Ruth decided she wasn't going to take it anymore. I suppose the reason people don't like getting out of their comfort zone is that they feel like they might not be able to handle life outside of it. I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore is a good example of what might happen when a seemingly normal person jumps out of their comfort zone and meets the seedy characters of the underworld. This is definitely one of the best Netflix Original films this year.

Gerald's Game

Now I've been called a gore-hound pretty much since I started jamilslist. Sure, I enjoy horror movies, a lot, but I don't enjoy bad horror movies. If you see a horror movie on my Netflix site, it isn't because I just love the blood, it's because it's a good movie. Speaking of good movies, I'd say Gerald's Game is the very best of Netflix Originals 2017. This movie has everything you could ask for in a Netflix Original movie. There's great acting, a great plot, lots of twists and turns, and some seriously brutal gore. I was actually pretty shocked in one scene in particular and I think you will be too. If you like Netflix horror movies even a little bit then Gerald's Game is an absolute must for you. It's the story of a woman handcuffed to a bed after a playful game goes wrong. For anyone who isn't a big horror fan, know that this is based on a Stephen King book. This is the guy that wrote The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Even if you aren't a fan of his horror (and I have no idea why you wouldn't be!) you have to admit that the man is a genius of a writer based upon those last two examples. Even without the horror scenes, Stephen King's brilliant writing comes through in Geralds Game. Geralds Game tops the list of Netflix Original movies because it is original and thrilling the whole time. Give it a try and prepare to cringe.

Burning Sands

Burning Sands is another good movie from Netflix Originals 2017. It's the story of a young man pledging to be in a popular campus fraternity. I thought Burning Sands did a good job of making a usually boring plot interesting. The college hazing story has been done more than once, but this Netflix Original movie has something powerful about it. I sort of came away with some mixed feelings about how good it was at first, but I eventually came around and realized that it was definitely worth the watch. What I really liked about Burning Sands is that it breaks all stereotypes around the typical college hazing genre. It also had a great depiction of young kids in their college years. There's sex, violence, and a whole lot of hazing. If you're in the mood for a good Netflix Original, Burning Sands is a great option.

Win It All

Win It All is the story of Eddie the small-time gambler and how he finds himself in the possession of a bag full of money. Win It All is yet another great movie from Netflix Originals 2017. Turns out Netflix Originals got a few right this year. Win It All manages to bounce back and forth between a comedy and a drama. What does that make this movie I wonder, a dramedy? It's a fairly simple story with great actors and plenty of action to keep you interested. Win It All isn't one of those Netflix Original movies that try s too hard with some crazy plot twists or fancy camerawork. Win It All is a steady flowing movie where every actor brings a little bit to the table and Jake Johnson pulls off his usual likable role.

It has really been hit or miss with Netflix Original movies lately but these give me hope that 2018 will be a great year for Netflix Original films!
