The Best Drama Movies on Netflix Right Now

This year there have been some great dramas showing up on Netflix streaming. I can't say I exactly know why, but for whatever reason, this was a good year for the category of Netflix drama. When you put together a list of dramas on Netflix it's usually hard to find movies from a bunch of different subgenres within the category. Today I have a list of the best Netflix dramas in a wide range of categories from comedy dramas to thriller dramas. When looking for drama movies on Netflix I wanted to make sure I brought a list of movies that are heartfelt and still manage to keep you guessing and interested in what's going to happen next. I wouldn't want to bring you a list of movies that are just depressing the entire time. I think good drama movies on Netflix should have their high and low points, and that's what I aimed for with the movies below.

Sun Choke

So I thought I would start out this list with one of the dark drama movies on Netflix. Sun Choke is about a woman forced to do a strict regimen under the guidance of her caretaker. Very few people have seen Sun Choke and they are really missing out on some strange and interesting drama. Sun Choke is what you would call a moody piece except that it isn't boring for one minute. The acting is great and every character in the story brings in a new twist. Sun Choke is fairly unnerving as it delves into the mind of a severely disturbed mental patient, and takes you along for the ride. It's honestly hard to explain why this is one of the best drama movies on Netflix, so you're just going to have to trust me on this. If you like dark, strange, dramas, then you will love Sun Choke.

Burning Sands

Burning Sands is the story of a student pledging to be a member of a fraternity at Frederick Douglass University. I actually found Burning Sands by mistake when I was looking for another movie about the Roman war. As it turns out, Burning Sands was even better than what I was looking for! What makes Burning Sands a good Netflix drama, is that it's a coming of age story that avoids stereotypes and brings an honest look into the crazy lives of college pledges. I myself have never been one to want to be in a fraternity, but I remember seeing classmates back in college who thought it was important to be a part of a group like that. Burning Sands is a fresh new look into the mental, emotional, and physical hazing that many students in our country have experienced. If you're looking for a new age story about college hazing then this is one of the best drama movies on Netflix to see.

The Road

The Road is another one of those good drama movies on Netflix that don't completely fit into the drama category alone. Don't get me wrong, there are some very dramatic moments, but there is also a very dark theme to the story. The Road is about a man traveling with his son in a post-apocalyptic world trying to survive day by day. The Road is a pretty chilling view into what the world would be like in a post-apocalyptic era. Viggo Mortensen does a great job portraying a dad desperate to protect his son from the horribly violent world they live in. Some of the best drama movies on Netflix are the ones that are the gritty, dirty, stories of survival and what a man will do to protect himself and his family.

Hector

Hector is another one of those dramas on Netflix that people have rarely seen. It's the story of a homeless man traveling on his annual pilgrimage through the south of London. As things unfold, the story of how he ended up on the streets comes to light. Hector is a Netflix drama that probably fits the genre the best. There are quite a few funny moments in Hector, but overall, it's a sad story about homelessness and how people end up there. But like I mentioned at the beginning, I wouldn't offer you one of the best drama movies on Netflix that was just a sad movie the whole time. Hector is a very genuine character and many people he meets along the way are as well. Hector might just be the most deserving movie of all to be on this list of drama films.

Bald Mountain

Bald Mountain is the story of two friends searching for gold and overcome by greed in the Amazon in the 1980's. Bald Mountain is a great movie out of Brazil and is a very intense Netflix drama. I would say Bald Mountain probably fits into the category of Netflix drama with a subgenre of bloody and violent. Brazil has such an interesting and sordid past when it comes to crime lords and Bald Mountain is a great portrayal of that. Bald Mountain is one of those dramas on Netflix that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. It has great acting and every character is more ruthless than the next. I wish there were more dramas on Netflix like Bald Mountain.

Manson Family Vacation

Manson Family Vacation is the story of two brothers who set out to tour the Charles Manson murder sites. Manson Family Vacation is one of the dramas on Netflix that fits into the subcategory of family. I haven't seen any of the actors in Manson Family Vacation before but they all give great performances. This is a Netflix drama for anyone that has an estranged family member. Manson Family Vacation is one of those Netflix dramas that is very thought-provoking and has a lot to say about family relationships. Plus, it has a scene that builds up the most tension I've seen in any of the dramas on Netflix. Give it a try.

Omar

Omar is one of the best Netflix drama movies about relationship issues. That's actually a pretty big understatement considering Omar is a very intense film about a Palestinian man agreeing to work as an informant. There are a lot of different Netflix dramas out there, and Omar is definitely in a category of its own. There's plenty of twists and turns in Omar and it really highlights the conflicts in occupied Palestine. I don't pretend to know the history of this conflict but I admire the loyalty the characters in Omar have for their country. Omar is also one of the Oscar-nominated Netflix drama movies.

The Great Alone

The Great Alone is the story of champion dog sled racer Lance Mackey and how he came to be the man he is today. As far as Netflix dramas go, The Great Alone is by far the most inspiring story of a man overcoming obstacles. An added benefit of this movie is getting to see the beautiful wilderness of Alaska. I really liked how the documentary takes you through his life from start to beginning and really shows you how his passion for his dogs ultimately lead to his success. The Great Alone is one of the best drama movies on Netflix for the simple fact that it can inspire you to shoot for the moon.

Lion

I would say that Lion is my favorite Netflix drama. Besides it being my personal favorite, it is widely considered to be the best of the best of Netflix dramas. Lion is the true story of a man realizing he got separated from his family in India at a very early age and deciding to go back to find his birth family. I can't say enough about Lion. It's a very heartwarming movie about family. Don't be surprised if this one pulls on your heart strings ( or breaks your heart ) because there is a lot of genuine emotion throughout the film. All actors are great and for Netflix dramas, this should be your number 1 choice tonight.
