The Best Documentaries on Netflix Right Now
The best documentary movies on Netflix are the ones that have you hooked from the moment you press play. There is just something about real life stories that can draw you in and keep you engaged in the plot. Even if the documentary is coming from a different country or time period, we can all relate to the human emotion of the film and we don't have to waste any time getting through any culture shock barriers. The list below is some of the best documentary movies on Netflix right now. Each and every one of these Netflix documentaries will keep you enthralled in the story from start to finish.
Valley Uprising
Valley Uprising is at the top of the list of these Netflix documentaries for a reason. Valley Uprising is an unforgettable tale of the history of rock climbing in Yosemite National Park. Even though Valley Uprising was made in 2014, I still think it is one of the best documentaries on Netflix 2017. I can't speak highly enough about the attention to detail in the creation of this documentary. The filmmakers go back in time to the roots of rock climbing and present it in a modern, artistic way. Netflix documentaries rarely provide the adrenaline rush that Valley Uprising does. I'm not even a rock climber and this story inspired me to go out and give it a try! This is one of the few Netflix documentaries with a tiny budget and a terrifyingly interesting story.
BETTING ON ZERO
BETTING ON ZERO is one of those Netflix documentaries that is hard to look away from. I think most of us have heard of Herbalife at one time or another in our lives. I even tried to be an Herbalife seller when I was a teenager (things clearly didn't work out). BETTING ON ZERO is a film aimed at unraveling the Herbalife company as a long-standing pyramid scheme. I have to give it to the directors of BETTING ON ZERO, they make a very compelling case. At this point, I would say that BETTING ON ZERO made me a believer and it's one of the more popular Netflix documentaries right now. Sure, BETTING ON ZERO might feel a little bit like a propaganda video, but a lot of investigative journalism does. What separates BETTING ON ZERO from other Netflix documentaries with investigative journalism is that they present concrete facts that can hardly be disputed. If you're looking for one of the best documentaries on Netflix right now, give BETTING ON ZERO a try. This should also be in the category of the best crime documentaries on Netflix. White collar crimes can be some of the most damaging to the community.
The Look of Silence
The Look of Silence should really be considered one of the best documentaries on Netflix 2017 and one of the best Netflix documentaries period. It's a very heavy film that is hard to watch from the beginning. I actually never knew anything about the genocide in Indonesia before I watched this film. It was good to get a lesson in history but it was a very painful one. The Look of Silence is the story of the 1960's genocide in Indonesia. The director of the film manages to create a breathtaking view of the evil humans are capable of. There are more than a few scenes in The Look of Silence that are shocking. I don't think I've seen a more significant Netflix documentary though. The main character is defiant in the face of evil and pushes forward in search of answers the entire movie. So many lives were affected in this bloody history of Indonesia and The Look of Silence is a great reminder of the nightmarish actions we are capable of. I can't think of any other Netflix documentaries that actually interview vicious murders that faced no punishment whatsoever.
Welcome To Leith
Whoa, talk about a scary Netflix documentary. Welcome to Leith is a Netflix documentary about white supremacist Craig Cobb's attempt to take over a small town in North Dakota. Cobb manages to be one of the most despicable human beings I have seen in a long time. Everything about the guy is disturbing. This is one of the best documentaries on Netflix because it is frighteningly real. Welcome to Leith skates the line between the rights of normal citizens and the rights of horrible anti-semitic white supremacists. It's a classic villain story that almost seems like it couldn't actually be possible for this to happen. Welcome to Leith is one of the top 10 Netflix documentaries that are real-life thrillers. Needless to say, this Netflix documentary is thought-provoking, to say the least. If you are looking for one of the best documentary movies on Netflix about the vile hatred and ignorance of white supremacists, in a way you haven't seen before, you've come to the right place.
The Seven Five
I'd say The Seven Five is one of the best crime documentaries on Netflix I've seen. The Seven Five is the story of a heavily corrupted police precinct in Brooklyn. Pretty much everything about The Seven Five is interesting. For some reason, this isn't one of the most popular Netflix documentaries out there, but I have no idea why. These are the dirtiest cops I have ever seen! Michael Dowd was just a criminal pretending to be a cop. It seemed like he took advantage of anyone and everyone. In most Netflix documentaries on this list, you have the good guys and the bad guys but these guys were all horrible people. Who knows what crimes the cops of the 75th precinct got away with. It only takes about 10 minutes into this Netflix documentary to hear Michael Dowd willingly confess to all his crimes. This is one of the eye-opening Netflix documentaries about a dark time in New York City law enforcement.
Finders Keepers
Finders Keepers is definitely the strangest Netflix documentary on this list of the best documentaries on Netflix right now. This is the type of movie that you just have to see to believe. Finders Keepers is the story of a man who finds a human leg in a BBQ grill. Talk about a custody battle from beyond the grave. This is up there with some of the weirdest documentaries I have ever seen. What's powerful about this Netflix documentary is that it actually has a heartfelt story behind it all. Shannon Whisnant is clearly a character and he carries the movie half the time. Although, it's clear that he has some major issues in his life. So if you're looking for a good documentary on Netflix to laugh to tonight, this would be the one for you.
There's plenty of options out there for Netflix documentaries, but I wouldn't recommend them all. All of the documentaries above are guaranteed to stay with you for awhile. The best documentaries on Netflix are the ones that make you laugh, or cry, keep you engaged or enraged, and leave you with something to think about. Whatever you take from it, we can all relate to the real-life experiences of others and every single one of these Netflix documentaries is worth your time.
