Good Netflix Movies 2017 (continued)

Wow, new movies on Netflix are hard to come by. I gotta say that I'm a little bit surprised on how Netflix picked up in the second half of 2017. I really didn't have much faith in it happening after I had a hard time coming up with the Good Movies on Netflix 2017 (so far) post. It just seemed like Netflix new movies weren't worth anyone's time. It was really slim pickings then, but all the sudden Netflix decided to come back with a bang to finish out the year. Thankfully we finally have some good Netflix movies to watch. One thing I will say is that I for one, am surprised at the strength of some of these Netflix Original movies. Don't get me wrong, it's not a guarantee when you see that Netflix logo pop up right before the movie starts, but I'm just happy to see some real quality coming out of it. Just to be clear, these are not movies that came out in 2017. These are movies that got added to Netflix in the year of 2017. In a way, they are the best of Netflix new releases. So if you're looking for a list of 2017 Netflix films, here ya go.

Donald Cried

Jamilslist

Donald Cried is one of the best comedies on Netflix, in the category of awkward. I spend a lot of time looking for new movies on Netflix so I've decided to make up this awkward category. There is a lot to like about Donald Cried. There are no special effects, there is no blood and gore, but what is there is a funny story about life that we can all relate to. As you're reading this think about high school. Think about all the friends you had and the memories you made. Then think about that one friend of yours that just seemed a little bit off and you always wondered what happened to them. If you went to your hometown after being gone for fifteen years and ran into them, it's possible they could be living a successful and happy life, and it's possible that they could have turned into Donald. I don't want to sound too harsh because Donald Cried actually reminded me of more than a few friends I knew in high school and I still don't know what really happened to them. It's always been really interesting to me how everyone you knew in life ultimately goes in different paths in life that lead to their own success or failure. I've known people that become very successful in life and I've known people that turned out to be more like Donald. The point I'm trying to make is that this movie is very relatable to everyone. With that being said, it's an extremely awkward and funny movie. For an indie type of movie, the acting is perfect and the actor that played Donald is particularly good at the role. Donald Cried is one of the best Netflix new releases in the comedy genre. If you're looking for an interesting comedy that will keep you entertained and probably make you cringe in your seat, give Donald Cried a shot, it's well worth it.

Raw

Jamilslist

The French people are usually known for their great dramas but I've slowly but steadily seen them producing more and more of the gritty, gory type of flicks. French directors have actually been adding a lot of new movies on Netflix and Raw is a great addition. Raw is a mix of a European coming of age movie and a horrible family secret that takes a girl down a very dark path. We can all relate to not wanting to be the "outsider" of the family, but Justine really struggles to understand why her family never meant for her to follow this path. I actually didn't read the reviews before I saw Raw and I recommend you do the same. Some of the best movies on Netflix are the ones you know nothing about before you see it. That is unless you're not a fan of movies with blood. In that case, I would recommend you stick with Donald Cried. But if you aren't too worried about it, don't bother reading the reviews of watching the trailer. Just turned on Raw and watch the story unfold. I've purposely left out a lot of details in the hopes that you do just this. Interestingly enough, I heard that Raw made a few audience members throw up at the Toronto Film Festival. I can't say that I got that feeling, but who knows, maybe I have a strong stomach.

Geralds Game

Jamilslist

Here you go, the cream of the crop of Netflix new releases. Ok, it's no secret, if you've been following my reviews for awhile, you know how much I love Stephen King movies that are done right. I grew up with the movies that terrified me as a kid like Pet Sematary, IT, and The Thing, so I'm pretty sure that Stephen King left a mark on me at an early age. There's just something about how his sick and twisted mind works that really gets under your skin. When it's correctly applied to a movie, the results are great. You usually never hear people say that the movie was better than the book, as it's usually the other way around. But from what I understand, Gerald's Game wasn't a book that received a lot of praise. So since it wasn't his best work, I'm happy to say that the movie edition was great! It has the usual psychological feel of a Stephen King movie, coupled with great actors. You never thought a playful game could lead to things so terrifying like it does in Gerald's Game. One thing I will say is it has one of the most gruesome scenes I have seen to date. Like I mentioned with Raw, if you are a little squeamish when it comes to blood, avoid Gerald's Game at all costs. If you aren't, you're in for one extremely intense scene. I'd say *Gerald's Game" is one of the best thrillers on Netflix and I think it's also one of the top horror movies on Netflix right now.

Madre

Jamilslist

Madre was one of the first movies in a long time that I just picked from under the category of Netflix new releases without spending an hour on reviews. So at first, I didn't think Madre was going to make my Netflix movie list. Five minutes in, I thought it was going to be one of the "made for TV" type of movies. Madre is a Spanish movie about a mother struggling to take care of her autistic child. What really intrigued me about Madre was that I never really understood anything about autism. Prior to watching Madre I thought autism was a much less severe disorder so I'm grateful for this movie opening my eyes to the subject. With that being said, Madre might just grab your attention and never let go until the end. It has a way of making you watch from one scene to the next without really noticing how interested you are to find out what's coming next. Madre is a pretty sinister movie with a lot of different characters popping in and out. Madre is not the best movie you've ever seen on Netflix, but there is a lot to be said about movies that keep you entertained the whole movie. Even though I said it's not the best, that doesn't mean it's not a good movie to watch when you want to sit back and try to figure out a deep and dark mystery for 2 hours. This is another good European movie out of Spain to add to the list, glad I found it.

Like I mentioned before, some Netflix new movies can be hard to sit through. The movies listed above are the second half of the best of Netflix movies 2017. To be clear again, these movies are some of the best movies that got added to Netflix in 2017. Netflix new releases aren't always the best choices out there but each and every one of these movies brought something new to the table and any one of them is definitely worth your time. I'm really looking forward to what Netflix is going to bring in 2018. Stay tuned for that post and make sure to check my homepage for all my weekly updates!
