Good Movies on Netflix 2014
There really were some good movies on Netflix in 2014. I feel like 2014 was just a strange year overall, but for under the radar movies, it was great! Thinking about it now, it's hard to remember exactly what I was doing in 2014. I didn't have jamilslist up and running yet, but it was in the works. I remember wasting hours looking through so many movies on Netflix that I decided that I would save people from the nightmare I was in. Anyways, movie wise, it was a great year for Netflix. I could tell the movies below were going to make my Netflix movies list as early as 30 minutes into each of them.
Starry Eyes
You really don't think much of Starry Eyes when you start watching it. It kinda comes off as a B-rate type of movie that doesn't have much of anything. But after about 10 to 15 minutes, you start to see the quality of acting and the B-rate quality of movie doesn't really matter anymore. Once things start to take off it just gets weirder and darker with every passing minute. Not to give anything away, but they really did a good job of changing a pretty girl into something... umm... not pretty. Like I always say, my Netflix movies list was born from dark movies, and dark, good movies will continue to have my highest approval.
ABC's of Death 2
What's the number one thing I look for on my Netflix movies list you ask? Originality. I feel like I'm repeating myself over and over, but the ABC's of Death 2 is probably the most original movie I've ever seen on Netflix. So I guess the fact that it's a bunch of short stories allows it to easily escape from the cookie cutter story lines, but I think it's more than that. I think the reason I'm so impressed with the originality is that the creator of the movie must have picked directors from all different walks of life. You can tell he clearly valued the diversity of films just from the different countries and languages the short films represent. If you haven't seen ABC's of Death 2 yet, you have to check it out. By the way, just because I'm giving this one a great review, don't think I'm giving the first movie two thumbs up. In fact, I don't recommend you watching the first one.
Valley Uprising
Valley Uprising was one of the first documentaries I've seen that was done in a new-age film type of way. It isn't all 80's throwback video quality, or just black and white pictures. The director managed to take us back in time and still add video quality that makes this documentary just plain fun to watch. Valley Uprising really captures the history and evolution of rock climbing in a seriously terrifying way. I mean, I like sports, but some of these extreme sports are just too intense for me. It's the type of edge-of-your-seat entertainment we all crave, but doing what these guys are doing in real life is just unthinkable for me. Once Valley Uprising transitions into free climbing, that's where I retired my thoughts of ever being a real-life rock climber. After that I just wanted to sit back and enjoy the natural beauty of nature that these guys were willing to show me from the side of vertical cliffs hundreds of feet in the air. Oh, and sometimes they had absolutely no rope supports.
Backcountry
Well thanks BackCountry. I won't be going camping anytime soon now. This IFC Midnight movie just reinforced my deep, dark fear of bears in the wilderness. I know, I know, you probably have just as much chance getting attacked by a bear than you do getting attacked by a shark, or struck by lightning, but it doesn't mean it can't still raise the hairs on my neck to witness a well acted horror scene about it. They're aren't many movies on Netflix about getting lost in the woods, but this has to be one of the best if not thee best one. What's also striking about this movie is the incredible Canadian backdrop and scenery. I've never been to a Canadian forest, but I want to some day now. Without, you know, the blood thirsty bears.
It Follows
Boy does it follow. In fact, it never stops following apparently. I can't imagine a worst feeling than constantly having to worry about impending death. We officially have another winner for the most original horror movie on Netflix. I haven't even seen this storyline before and I don't think you have either. It Follows must truly be a nightmare for teenagers to watch, as it is based on a very real risks teenagers take. Although there are a few scenes that my jump out at you, what really gets you is the dread. The dread of something you don't understand. In a way it seemed a little bit like Babadook to me. Both are confusing, unnerving, and two of the best Netflix horror movies. A lot of the time, the creepiest part of a horror movie is low eerie music, but the creepiest part of It Follows is for sure the silence. It's the silence that has you looking over your shoulder when you feel like someone is watching, or stalking, you. If your looking for a scare, this is one of the best Netflix movies to stream.
The Seven Five
Former NYPD officer Michael Dowd truly is about 95% criminal, and 5% cop. In The Seven Five he really seems to be delusional about the effect he had on the community in search of his dirty money. In a way, you find yourself relating more with his partner, Kenny Eurell, because he has a much more likable demeanor. Although as the movie goes on, you realize he's just as bad as Michael was. What's really interesting about The Seven Five was getting to see the history of the New York precincts in 1980's and early 1990's. New York has always had a strong reputation for their police departments, but until this documentary came out, I had no idea how bad it was in those times. With that aside, talk about an entertaining corrupt-cop story. As detestable as their actions are, I promise you will be fascinated by this documentary. Both men are able to detail so many interesting facts about how they managed to pull all their criminal acts off right under the nose of fellow policemen. For true crime stories, The Seven Five fits the bill as one of the best Netflix documentaries out there.
These are just some of the many good movies on Netflix that made my movie list in 2014. I have been slowly putting together a list of all the best movies on Netflix by year, so it you're interested, check out my 2015 and 2016 posts. Anyways, all of these 2014 movies are worth at least two hours of your life, and are still some of the best Netflix movies streaming today. Next up, is the best movies on Netflix 2017.
