Best Horror Movies on Amazon Prime

Some of the best movies on Amazon Prime right now are horrors. I will be the first to admit that Amazon Prime doesn't have nearly as many good movies as Netflix does but that doesn't mean we can't find some diamonds in the rough. I've spent a seriously long time combing through the best of Amazon Prime movies and these movies below are the absolute best horror movies it has to offer. So sit back, relax, and get ready for blood.

Afflicted

Jamilslist

Afflicted is the story of two friends on a European vacation. Along the way one of them seems to have contracted a strange disease that has them both worrying about his health. Talk about a fun found-footage horror. Afflicted managed to do what a lot of found-footage movies couldn't. They mixed realism with cinematic effects in a flawless way. There's no big Hollywood budget here and they don't even need one. Afflicted is a pretty terrifying story that feels like an urban legend for European backpackers. I love when indie films like this throw competition to the multi-million dollar counterparts in the horror genre. It just goes to show that creativity trumps all with it comes to creating one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime. Afflicted didn't reinvent the game but it did come up with a smarter and more interesting way to play with the genre. If you need any more convincing that Afflicted is a great movie to watch, know that it was the winner of Best Picture (Horror), Best Screenplay (Horror), Best Director (Horror) at Fantastic Fest and a winner of the recognition award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Girl with all the Gifts

Jamilslist

In the not so distant future, a fungus is slowly taking over the earth and turning ordinary people into flesh-eating monsters. Speaking of creativity, The Girl with all the Gifts managed to pull off a pretty good twist on the zombie movie genre. The Girl with all the Gifts brings you everything you'd expect from a good zombie movie and then it adds in a strange new direction. I'd be lying if I said I didn't love the gore of good zombie movies, but there was a lot more to it with this one. At the heart of every zombie apocalypse movie you have the constant struggle for survival, but The Girl with all the Gifts brought a new layer to the piece by adding in a much stronger cast than you might normally see in a zombie horror movie. I had a great time watching all characters from one scene to the next and I think you will too. The little girl's acting was very good for her age and she turned out to be a lot more vicious than I expected. Even though there are kids in this movie, this is definitely not one of the kids movies on Amazon Prime.

Green Room

Jamilslist

A traveling punk-rock band gets trapped in a green room by white supremacists. Talk about horrifying. Green Room managed to shake me to the core with just one particular scene. Be warned, this movie is extremely graphic in some parts and you might just find yourself feeling pretty uncomfortable at what you're witnessing. If you're like me, it's hard to phase you with horror scenes. I have to admit that Green Room was one of the first movies in a while that had me in awe of its brutality. Needless to say, this made my list of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime because it is shockingly violent. The whole cast of this movie is just so sadly equipped to handle the violence played out in front of them. I think everyone knows by now that neo Nazi's are horrible people, but Green Room might just remind you how violent and evil they can be. One thing I will say is that Anton Yelchin will truly be missed and I was very glad to find another film that he was in after I heard of his passing. He brings a lot of good acting to this film. Green Room is another movie by director Jeremy Saulnier who was responsible for bringing us the masterpiece of Blue Ruin. You can tell that some directors just get it in a way that others don't. Jeremy Saulnier continues to wow the audience with gritty realism and bloody violence that is frighteningly real. I can't wait to see what movies on Amazon he comes up with next.

What we do in the Shadows

Jamilslist

Not only is this one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime, it's one of the best comedies on Amazon Prime. What we do in the Shadows is the story of a group of vampires living in a flat together and navigating through the complexities of modern life. I swear this is one of the funniest mockumentaries I have ever seen. Every character in this movie is great and they all bring something funny to the table. The writers of Flight of the Conchords are behind this one and they continue to bring originality to the screen in the funniest way possible. There aren't that many vampire comedies that nail it (pun intended) like What we do in the Shadows does. Whether you're a fan of serious vampire movies or silly ones, I bet you'll find everything you need in this one. We have blood, gore, guts, ancient vampires, and even a torture rack. They play off all the known vampire drawbacks, like not even being able to get into clubs without an invitation. I had had a hard time finding the best horror movies on Amazon Prime til I ran into this classic. If you have a few hours, this is my number one choice of movies to watch on Amazon Prime right now. I promise you you will be laughing the whole time.

Jeeper Keepers

Jamilslist

This movie is leaving Amazon Prime Movies on August 30th

So we're going old school with Jeepers Creepers but if you haven't seen it yet, it's a fun horror movie on Amazon Prime right now. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking "Wow, that was pretty creepy". I think it's the name that kind of turns people off to it. A lot of people tried to just trash Jeepers Keepers because it was a horror movie about college kids making stupid decisions that got themselves in harm's way. Newsflash to anyone who hasn't realized this yet, but that's what 99% of all horror movies are. What made Jeepers Creepers more interesting was the cinematography, the perfectly timed scares, and the type of evil that you just can't pretend to understand. I will always remember the scene with them driving by and witnessing something they shouldn't have. Without giving anything away, I think you will know exactly what I'm talking about not even 20 minutes into Jeepers Creepers. I still think some Amazon Prime horror movies need to be a little bit more like Jeepers Creepers. So forget the naysayers and give it a try... you have nothing to lose... except maybe an eye?

The best horror movies on Amazon Prime have a long way to go to compete with Netflix horror movies, but these listed above are still some great competition. There's not exactly a shortage of Amazon prime horror movies but they focus more on the classic horror movies that I think most people have already seen. These movies represent the new generation of horror movies on Amazon prime and I think they are setting the stage for some more great movies to come. Stay tuned for my next review of the best thrillers on Amazon Prime and if you need some thrillers on Netflix, feel free to check out this post or find some newly added ones here.

Enjoy!
