Best Dramas on Amazon Prime

I think some of the best dramas on Amazon Prime are hidden behind the mainstream blockbusters Amazon seems to advertise every day. These drama's listed here aren't exactly the most popular movies in the world but they are all great movies that you should take a chance on. I could show you all the huge movies like Wolf of Wall Street or GoodFellas but I want to bring something new to the table. Anyone who recommends a list of movies on Amazon Prime should be trying to focus on the movies you might not have seen yet, and I believe there is at least one of these that fits the bill. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the best dramas on Amazon Prime.

Swiss Army Man

Jamilslist

Swiss Army Man is certainly one of the best dramas on Amazon Prime, but it could also be considered one of the best comedies on Amazon Prime. Swiss Army Man is such an eccentric ride through the twisted minds of all three directors of this film. Paul Dano seemed perfect for this role and he always seems to pick really interesting films to star in. Not to be out done, Daniel Radcliffe pulls off a pretty incredible (and ridiculous) performance. It actually might be the best performance I've ever seen from him. I mean the first 10 - 15 minutes into Swiss Army Man and you'll be witnessing one of the most absurd and ridiculous scenes ever. I really enjoyed all the randomness and how the directors managed to make this one of the best dramas on Amazon Prime and simultaneously one of the weirdest movies on Amazon Prime. There's a rumor that while Swiss Army Man debuted at Sundance, a few people walked out during the middle of it. That probably gives you an idea of how gross and disturbing some of these scenes are but I loved every minute of it. If you tell me a movie is "gross" or "disturbing" I'll be the first in line to give it a shot!

Room

Jamilslist

Room is the story of a mother and son trapped in a room. It's hard to describe this movie without giving too much away but it's an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. Room definitely deserves to be on my Amazon Prime movies list as one of the best dramas on Amazon Prime, but it's also a great thriller, as I talked about here. A good drama might just have you laughing, crying, or cheering and I think Room will do at least one of those for you. As much as this movie might remind you of how horrible human beings can be to each other, it's also a great story of never fading hope and how we can ultimately over come the worst of what life throws at you.

Into the Wild

Jamilslist

Into the Wild is the life story of Christopher McCandless. He was born to wealthy parents but chose to shed himself of all materialistic things and live a life alone in the wilderness of Alaska. Into the Wild used to be one of my favorite movies on my Netflix streaming list, but for some reason, Netflix decided it wasn't good enough for their platform anymore. I have no idea why they did that, but it is definitely one of the best dramas on Amazon Prime now. I think this is one of the first movies that Emile Hirsch really cemented himself as a great actor. I dare you to do a google search and try to find a bad review about Into the Wild. For a drama, this is one of the best movies on my Amazon Prime movies list. Whether or not you agree with McCandless's actions, you really have to give it to him that he lived his life the way he wanted. I really think too many people just try to live the same lives as everyone else. In my opinion, there will always be a clear path to a mediocre life and about 80% of the population follows that path. You can work at a job you hate or never do anything different in life, but is that really living? Christopher McCandless didn't think so and I don't either. But hey, don't get me wrong, I could never live my life to the extreme like he did. I simply appreciate the fact that he got fed up with all the things around him and decided to blaze his own trail.

Ex Machina

Jamilslist

Ex Machina is the story of a programmer who wins a contest to meet the genius CEO of his company. This movie had a way of sending chills up my spine by the end. It definitely deserves to be in the drama category but it's also a type of science fiction thriller. There is a very clear and classic undertone of how creating life is not supposed to be in the power of mankind and I think the drama really stems from that. Also, I think the best dramas on Amazon Prime are the ones you can actually relate to, and with Ex Machina your mind starts to go towards the classic route of a type of Dr. Frankenstein movie feeling that most of us have seen before. So in that sense, you have a familiar feeling of knowing the plot but things quickly speed up and out of the basics of that plot before you know it. Throughout Ex Machina I was genuinely confused on what was going to happen. To me, it seemed like Ex Machina really crept in under the radar for how good of a movie it is. No one ever told me to go see it, and now that I have, I couldn't recommend it to you more. It's not the type of science fiction film that will have your head spinning at every detail, it's the type that will flip everything upside down the minute you think you know what's going on. So give Ex Machina a try, I bet you won't quite know who to trust in this one.

99 Homes

Jamilslist

99 Homes is a story of the real estate crash of 2008 from two different sides. One side is from the families that struggled to keep their homes after the crash and the other side is from people trying to profit from it. I feel like I have yet to see a better portrayal of the emotional effects of the real estate crash on families in America. I have first-hand experience of the crash and I feel really bad for people that took on predatory loans without really understanding what it meant. That's not to say there weren't people who were greedy and knowingly took on multiple loans they knew to be above their means, but losing a home is a very traumatic thing to happen to any family. I consider 99 Homes to be one of the best dramas on Amazon Prime because it is something that so many people in American experienced. The housing crash of 2008 affected so many lives I guarantee there will be people in the world that can relate to this movie in the worst way. There is great acting from both Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon so it's hard to know whose side you should be on at first. What made the crash even harder was the fact that so many jobs were lost in the midst of it and they made sure to portray that in 99 Homes. There are a whole lot of emotions flying around in this movie but I think most people can agree that it's one of the best dramas on Amazon Prime.

The One I Love

Jamilslist

Talk about a strange movie! The One I Love is the story of a couple having relationship issues and taking the advice of a counselor to spend a weekend together alone to work on their issues in a home recommended by the counselor. I can honestly say that I didn't have a clue what was going on in this movie and I think I'm still confused now. That's not to say it's not one of the best dramas on Amazon Prime because it is. It's just really weird.. and kind of confusing. The One I Love is a fresh look at the age-old problem couples face. I suppose if you really wanted to analyze this one you could, I just didn't find it necessary and was still entertained by all the craziness going on. Somewhere along the way, you feel like everything has turned into some kind of dark and introspective view of human nature. Overall I think the plot and the acting was so good that you just kind of let all the craziness wash over you without really getting into the details. I hope that I can find more movies like The One I Love to add to my Amazon Prime movies list in the future.

Amazon Prime has a decent amount of dramas to choose from. The only problem is they seem to keep removing the good ones and replacing them with the next big blockbuster. Because of this, it's hard for us to know which ones are the best dramas on Amazon Prime but the movies above are a great place to start. All of these movies have left a positive mark on me one way or another and together they pretty much span every human emotion possible. Stay tuned for my post on the best action movies on Amazon Prime coming soon!
