The Best Thrillers on Netflix

Good movies on Netflix are hard to find and the best thrillers on Netflix are never easy to find either. The problem is so many movies get labeled "thriller" when there's barely 5 minutes of thrilling action in them. What I present you with today is some of the best thrillers not only on Netflix but on any movie platform.

The Fury of a Patient Man

The Fury of a Patient Man is centered around revenge for a robbery gone wrong. What's pretty funny about this movie is that it forces you to be patient with him. There's plenty of good character work to keep you interested, but you find yourself sitting back and enjoying the simple story. All the sudden things come at you like a ton of bricks. The Fury of a Patient Man has all the brutality you need and more. The main character seems to be devoid of any goal other than the one he has set out to do from the beginning.

Suburra

Suburra is the modern age Italian mob to the fullest. Just with every good mob movie, there's plenty of blood and extremely ruthless crime lords. They did a great job of mixing in politics and corruption into this thriller. One thing I will say is that I really liked how they portrayed the younger bosses as brash and loud while the older bosses stayed calm and quiet. You start to see how the old bosses have been through it all and know not to make a fuss or at least appear not to. I'm really glad to see Italy coming back with another great mob thriller cause they've been lacking lately. After Gomorrah we were really left wanting more and this is the next best thing.

The Fear of 13

After more than 20 years on death row, convicted murderer Nick Yarris asks to be executed. This is absolutely one of the best thrillers on my Netflix movie list. It has everything you need all wrapped up in a stranger than fiction story. How Nick Yarris seems to have maintained his humanity after 20 years on death row is beyond me. I don't want to give anything away, so you'll just have to wait and see what his ultimate fate is. Nick's monologue throughout the whole movie is captivating and he never lets up telling his life's story. He talks about life on death row in a loving and compassion way which I didn't even know was possible. I don't understand how this documentary didn't win more awards. It's absolutely one of the best documentaries on Netflix.

Snowtown

Snowtown is a real life horror thriller. The fact that you know it actually happened just makes everything much worse. Everything starts in a pretty dilapidated small town in Australia where there doesn't seem to be much of anything going on. Preying on the insecurities of coming of age boys, a man commits unspeakable acts with their help. What's striking about this movie is how evil starts to grow throughout every character. John Bunting is the name of the real life monster and it turns out that he is to become Australia's most notorious serial killers. Everything seems fine when he first appears on screen. He smiles at everyone and is even reassuring that he's one of the good guys. Gives me the chills just thinking about watching this one.

The Clan

Just like Snowtown, the most thrilling part of The Clan is that you know it's a true story. The parents in the story are particularly monstrously evil people. The father's heart appears to be as black as one can get. It's really hard to believe a loving family could resort to doing such a thing as kidnapping their neighbors. You get the faint idea that the kids just don't know what's going on, but your opinion will probably change the longer it goes down the road. One thing I will say is that they really nailed the time period. It may not be the greatest thing for Argentinian audiences, but the American music is right on point. This is one of those rare good Netflix movies from Argentina.

The Wailing

The Wailing is nothing short of a nightmare. Good movies on Netflix like The Wailing only come by once a year. The plot starts with a town that is inexplicably cursed by a disease spreading through the small villages. All it takes is the first scene to see how horrifying this so called "disease" is. The Korean people are getting so good are horror, it's scary (no pun intended). I really found the religious aspect of the traditional Korean shamans interesting. Watching The Wailing you start to feel the fear building up in the main character and it slowly works it's way into you. There is a whole lot of spine-chilling moments and The Wailing never lets up. After all is said and done, there is such a dreadful feeling of helplessness that unfolds for each character.

I am Not a Serial Killer

I had a great time with I am Not a Serial Killer. Blood and gore await in this off the wall murder mystery. It's probably the most interesting coming of age story considering the kid spends his days wondering if he's going to grow up to be a serial killer. I can't remember exactly what it was but I think I read the title awhile ago and thought it was going to be another cheesy serial killer movie. Trust me, it's not. Christopher Lloyd is great in it and the main character stays true to his role throughout the film. One thing I will say is that I absolutely guarantee you will not know what is going to happen in the end. I know, you probably don't believe me, but this one isn't anything you can predict. Besides, the best Netflix movies are always the surprising ones.

The Square

There's a lot to like about the The Square. It has a lot of twists and turns that build up from adultery to straight up crime. I thought the best part of The Square is that it never forced the issue of where the movie was going. The movie never really slows down and just cruises at a high level, steady, pace. The main character Ray really thinks he's on top of everything until his deck of cards starts to crumble. The story plays out in some really interesting and beautiful towns in Australia, especially the one with a river running through it. If you like thrillers, this is one of the most intense films out of Australia.

Lets hope that they keep these great thrillers on Netflix because my Netflix movies list is full of them. It's hard to say which ones Netflix keeps everyday but I think you will agree that these should remain forever. Unfortunately, the best Netflix movies are usually the ones they take off so watch these as soon as possible. If you're in the mood for some drama next, here's a link to some great suggestions and next up is mysteries. Enjoy!
