The Best Movies on Netflix Right Now
Why is it so hard to find Netflix movies to watch these days? It seems like every other day Netflix removes a great movie from their list of streaming movies. Netflix new movies just come in and push everything out. At first, I thought that Netflix was just really catering to the masses and just showing us all the best movies alongside the worst, as long as people were watching them over a certain amount of times a month. That would truly be awful if that were the truth because, in my experience, the masses have the worst taste in movies. But low an behold, the real reason they remove movies is that they enter into contracts with each film creator, and when that contract is up for the medium of viewing (DVD or streaming) they remove that movie from the medium. Now I'm sure that they must acknowledge movies that are getting great reviews and they probably make every attempt to extend said movies to us when possible. I don't really know if I trust that or not and I don't think you should either. So now we're left to fend for ourselves in the search for the best movies on Netflix streaming. I personally only watch Netflix streaming and don't bother with DVD. My whole site is based on Netflix streaming movies and I spend a lot of time checking Netflix every week to ensure each movie I list is still streaming. So since we know some of the best movies on Netflix have a finite life on Netflix streaming, I think it's time that we list the very best movies on Netflix right now. The Babadook
I remember where I was when I first heard of the movie The Babadook. I was in New Orleans with my girlfriend celebrating New Year's Eve when I saw the only movie title listed on a tiny little movie theatre on the outskirts of town. I went back to our place and googled the strange name of "Babadook" and immediately saw all the reviews of how "scary" and "terrifying" it was. Of course, this piqued my interest, so the next night we watched in on Netflix. What I'll say about The Babadook is that it will scare you. You haven't seen a horror like this before and you probably never will. The Babadook is the story of a mother who thinks she's slowly losing her mind while something evil lurks in her home. The Babadook is one of the best movies on Netflix right now because you will never forget it. It's rare that a horror movie can stick in your mind long after you see it, but The Babadook will find you and get under your skin to stay.
Hot Fuzz
Nicholas Angel is a super cop that's just too good at his job. In the hopes of making the cops around him not look so bad, his superiors send him to a remote town that has a sinister murder mystery taking place. Few comedies on Netflix can claim to be the best movies on Netflix right now. There are more than a few comedies on Netflix and the majority of them aren't even worth your time. But one comedy that has managed to last the test of time is Hot Fuzz. Hot Fuzz has been on Netflix for quite a long time and it continues to put tears in people's eyes. Hot Fuzz is a quirky dark comedy turned buddy-cop action film. That sounds pretty interesting, doesn't it? After coming up with Shaun of the Dead Simon Pegg steps up to the plate and knocks another one out of the park with Hot Fuzz. It is not to be missed so press play tonight!
Gomorrah
Gomorrah is the brutal story of the Neapolitan mob's control over the slums of Campania. Everything about Gomorrah seems authentic and it's no wonder considering the movie is based on Roberto Saviano's non-fiction book about the Camorra crime syndicate. The most interesting part of Gomorrah was that they managed to make a brutal film artful. The second most interesting part of Gomorrah is that filmmakers finally stopped idolizing the mob and showed them for what they are. I'm so tired of seeing mobsters portrayed as the cool guy in every movie when in reality they corrupt and ultimately destroy the communities around them. Gomorrah doesn't pull any punches and you can tell that Robert Saviano clearly has experience of the effects of the mob on his community growing up. Not only is this one of the best gangster movies on Netflix, it's also one of the best movies on Netflix right now, period. Netflix new movies don't stand a chance against classics like this.
It Follows
I've always thought that It Follows was one of the best psychological thrillers on Netflix. From the beginning, you're on the edge of your seat and it doesn't really slow down from there. It Follows is the story of a teenager that contracts a curse after a sexual encounter. I can't say enough about how It Follows nails it with a perfect combination of tension and suspense. I mean, horror movies come and go, but this one will stick with you long after you see it. I think it's a great movie to scare kids about making bad decisions at a young age, but it will scare the adults too! David Robert Mitchell wrote and directed It Follows and I think he deserves the award for the most original horror movie on Netflix. Maybe he even deserves the honor of the most original horror movie in the last 20 years. He is clearly a great storyteller and I can't wait to see what he imagines up next.
13 Assassins
Let me ask you a question, do you love action movies? Because if you do, 13 Assassins is absolutely one of the best movies on Netflix right now. Since I know that you like action movies now, I know you must like Samurai! And since you like Samurai, you can't miss the best Samurai movie ever made. 13 Assasins is a remake of a 1963 film with the same precise of unemployed Samurai joining together to take down a sadistic lord. Everything about 13 Assassins is perfect including the cinematic time period, the outfits, and the brutal sword-wielding action. Every battle scene is beautifully bloody and all characters are authentic. There is no CGI or cheap camera tricks in 13 Assassins. This should be on everyone's list of Netflix action films. I promise you will find yourself rooting for the good guys and you will also find yourself seriously despising the evil lord. I haven't disliked an evil character this much in a long time.
Hush
I consider Hush to be one of the best movies on Netflix right now because it manages to put you in the position of the victim. We've all seen all the ridiculous horror movies with the innocent teenagers deciding to run into the serial killer's barn and hide behind his trove of torture tools. That scenario always plays out the same way. But in Hush you really start to feel for this girl and you start to wonder what her options really are. It takes a lot to come up with a new idea in a horror movie and Hush pulls it off perfectly. I would say there was more suspense in Hush than in any movie I've seen this year. Every scene is intense and you can tell the director really went out of his way to write in intelligent main characters to hold the movie together. Sure, you've seen the psychopath against the girl in distress before, but not like this you haven't.
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Even though We Need to Talk About Kevin is one of the most disturbing movies on Netflix, that doesn't mean it's not also one of the best movies on Netflix right now. We Need to Talk About Kevin is the story of a mother struggling to love her child after he portrays increasingly dangerous behavior. You really feel for Eva in this one (played by Tilda Swinton). I actually felt like I was on her side the whole time especially after the kid started doing some of the stuff he does. If you're looking for a good psychological thriller on Netflix, then We Need to Talk About Kevin is for you. I do agree with most reviewers when they say things like "dark and disturbing" in regards to this movie. But the disturbing parts aside, there is some artsy and interesting cinematography too. I thought it was cool to see John C. Reilly in a serious role after all the comedies he's been in lately. Check out We Need to Talk About Kevin while it's still on Netflix streaming.
Gerald's Game
Gerald's Game is definitely one of the best movies on Netflix right now and it is the newest addition to this Netflix movie list. Gerald's Game is the story of a woman handcuffed to a bed after a playful game goes wrong. I think it really takes a lot of skill to pull off the survival type of movies where a huge chunk of the film is in one place. It's not to say that Gerald's Game is a boring, one room, movie because it's anything but that. Gerald's Game really takes a psychological turn that keeps things fresh and interesting. The woman (played by Carla Gugino) seems to pass in and out of reality in the hopes of coming up with an answer to this increasingly horrifying experience. Take the time to check out Gerald's Game and beware of the gore that awaits you. This is definitely the best of Netflix new movies.
Memento
Memento is the oldest movie on this Netflix movie list, but that shouldn't stop you from seeing it. Have you heard of a well-known director named Christopher Nolan? Well, this is one of his first time-bending movies about a man trying to unravel a mystery while suffering from very short-term memory. Even though it was done back in 2000 Memento remains to be one of the best movies on Netflix right now. Christopher Nolan really puts you through the ringer in this one. When I first watched Memento I felt like the harder I tried to grasp the situation, the more the timeline messed with me. That might not make much sense to you right now, but it will when you watch it. Memento should be labeled thee thriller of my generation because I haven't seen any movie de-thrown it yet. All the actors in Memento are great and Guy Pierce's performance is perfect for this gritty story of revenge. It's still hard to find Netflix movies to watch, so do yourself a favor and watch this classic tonight.
City of God
City of God is a classic Netflix movie that is not to be missed. It's definitely not one of the Netflix new movies, but it's still one of the best. Even though it's nearly 15 years old, it's still one of the best movies on Netflix right now. Since it came out in 2002, I suppose it's considered a throwback to this new generation, but to me, it was, and will always be, one of the best films to come out of Brazil. I think we all have stories of rough neighborhoods growing up in the U.S., but the Brazil favelas take it to a whole other level. City of God is based on true events and there's a lot of follow up information to the stories if you're interested in reading about them. There's a lot of different characters throughout the film and everyone seems spot on as if they've lived the life already. Some might say it's pretty difficult to watch City of God and in a way, I would agree, but I still think it's necessary to know what really goes on in the impoverished places of the world. If you're looking for guns, drugs, and brutal gang violence, look no further than City of God. Gang wars just seem all that much worse when it involves kid gangsters.
Valley Uprising
If you're into rock climbing, this is one of the best Netflix movies to watch. Valley Uprising remains to be one of the best movies on Netflix right now because it takes you through the rollercoaster ride of pushing the limits of rock climbing. Valley Uprising starts from the beginning and takes you to present day rock climbing in the most terrifying way possible. I for one couldn't ever stomach rock climbing to these crazy heights. I've gone a few times, and although it's fun, the higher I go, the more I want to come down. Also, you might be thinking that a rock climbing movie isn't for you. I made that mistake at first, too. Even if you've never gone rock climbing a day in your life, Valley Uprising is an inspiring documentary of how a few kids formed together to create a cult following of rock climbers in Yosemite National Park. One of the craziest parts to me was that everything seemed to be so well documented. I mean this era barely had pictures to tell a story with, not like the hundreds of camera phones ready to film your every move on the street today. But with simple pictures and some amazing documentary camera work, the directors paint a perfect picture of what life was like back then for these self-proclaimed "Dirt Bags". You cannot miss Valley Uprising! It's extremely interesting, downright terrifying, and hilarious. This is definitely one of my favorite movies on Netflix to watch right now.

I really tried to span all genre's of movies to ensure that you get the best movies on Netflix in every category. Some of the movies above are throwback classics and some just came out this year. It's great to see that Netflix streaming still has a wide time frame of good movies available. Also, I must warn you, don't trust the big name companies that list the so-called "Best Movies on Netflix". What these companies do is search for movies that have been watched the most, no matter if they are good or absolutely terrible, and they recommend those to the masses because they know people are familiar with the titles. These companies pay huge amounts of money in marketing to feed you the worst Netflix has to offer. I, on the other hand, spend hours searching through the muck to bring you the best movies Netflix truly has to offer! Ok ok, I'm no knight in shining armor or anything (and I make zero dollars doing this), but I just wanted to warn you that the front page of a Google search is never the best place to find a good movie on Netflix.
