The Best Movies on Amazon Prime Right Now

There are more than a few Amazon Prime movies but in all honesty, the quality is not always there. I don’t know the specifics of how Amazon Prime movies make it onto Amazon, but I would say that the barrier to entry must be pretty low. It has taken me quite awhile, but I’ve managed to come up with a decent amount of movies to add to my Amazon Prime movies list. Although I only have about 16 Amazon Prime movies listed on my homepage, it’s not for lack of trying! I feel like Amazon isn’t really putting all that much effort into bringing us the best movies right now. Although they are seemingly headed in the right direction, they have quite a while before they are going to be able to directly compete with Netflix. Nevertheless, here are some of the best movies on Amazon Prime right now.

Kingpin

Kingpin remains to be one of my favorite comedies ever. It’s right up there with classics like Dumb and Dumber. It’s so strange to me that so many people have seen Dumb and Dumber, yet when I ask about Kingpin, they have not idea what I’m talking about. Not only is Kingpin one of the best comedies on Amazon Prime, it’s also one of the best movies on Amazon Prime. Kingpin is the story of Roy Munson, who is the golden boy of his local town and the state bowling champ. All it takes is one run-in with Ernie Macrackin to ruin his life and send him down a spiral of alcoholism. So like I mentioned, if you haven't seen Kingpin yet, I'm so excited to share it with you. It's absolutely in my top 5 of the funniest movies made. Sure, it's one of the best movies on Amazon Prime, but it might just be the best comedy ever made.

Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse Now is the oldest movie I have on my list whether it’s on my Netflix movies list, or Amazon Prime movies list. Although it is my oldest throwback, in no way does that take away from the quality of Apocalypse Now. I think you will be pretty amazed at how young Martin Sheen is in this movie. Every once in awhile, a director manages to pull off a harrowing look at the realities of war. If my generations best war director is Stephen Spielberg with his brilliant films like Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan, Francis Ford Copolla's Apocalypse Now was the war masterpiece of the late 1970's. Apocalypse Now is one of the best movies on Amazon Prime right now because it shows you the face of war from an angle that is rarely seen. Sure, war movies always manage to show the horrors of battle, but few really hit the mark when portraying war as a living hell. Francis Ford Coppola perfectly showcases the madness of war soldiers. If you're looking for one of the best Amazon Prime movies, this is it.

Blue Ruin

Blue Ruin is the story of a man seeking revenge over the death of his parents. Blue Ruin is one of the grittiest movies I've ever seen. It's a raw, stripped down to the bone, revenge story that will leave its mark on you for sure. It doesn't take long for Blue Ruin to get going and I think you'll see why it's one of the best Amazon Prime movies. Once the ball starts rolling in Blue Ruin everything just starts snowballing until the end. Macon Blair does a brilliant job portraying a recluse overcome by his parent's murder. It'd have to say that this is my favorite movie on my Amazon Prime movies list. Everything about Blue Ruin just seems real and authentic. There's a lot of back and forth action and I promise that you will enjoy this one.

What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows is one of the best comedies on Amazon Prime, if not the best comedy on Amazon Prime. It’s the story of vampire flatmates struggling to keep up with the times while adjusting to the ever-changing social aspects of living for hundreds of years. What We Do in the Shadows is seriously hilarious. These days, it's tough to have any originality in any type of vampire movie. We've all seen the typical "scary" vampire movie, but more often than not, they aren't worth watching. Don't get me wrong, there are great vampire movies like Interview with a Vampire, but most of the vampire movies you see today end up on the cover of Teen Beat magazine. What We Do in the Shadows is one of the best movies on amazon prime right now because it strips away everything you know about vampire movies and brings you a fresh, insanely funny, look at a bunch of old vampires fumbling their way through another blood-splattered century.

Green Room

Green Room might just be one of the most brutal movies you see this year. This is yet another great movie brought to us by the genius mind of director Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin). A small-time rock band books a gig to play at a white supremacist party. Not that you really needed a reminder, but Green Room will remind you about how horribly violent nazis can be. Green Room stars the late Anton Yelchin (RIP) and he pulls off his normal, great, performance. In my opinion, some of the best movies on Amazon Prime are the ones that have shockingly gruesome scenes. I’ve always been one for bloody violence in movies, but I must admit, Green Room really took it to another level. There are a few scenes that might just make you cringe or even turn your stomach. So if you have a weak stomach, be prepared for that. But if you don’t, you’re in for one hell of a ride! Like I mentioned before, there are a million and one horror movies on Amazon Prime, but only a few like Green Room deserve to be called one of the best Amazon Prime movies in the genre.

Ex_Machina

Ex_Machina is the story of a mid-level programmer that wins a chance to meet his companies CEO, and genius programmer, at his remote location off the grid. The first thing that stands out in my mind with Ex_Machina is the role played by Oscar Isaac. He does a great job of portraying an eccentric genius engrossed in his life work without much care for anything else in the world. Ex_Machina should be on everyone's Amazon Prime movies list at this point. Not only is it a great thrill ride and mystery, but it manages to be original in an artificial intelligence plot that has been tried over and over with little effective results. As the story unfolds, you think you have the answers, but I doubt it will all make sense to you until the very end. Ex_Machina is well worth your time and is one of the best movies on Amazon Prime.

Afflicted

Afflicted made my list of the best movies on Amazon Prime right now because it stands up against big budget movies with a tiny indie budget. It doesn’t take long to see that Afflicted probably cost a tenth of what a normal Hollywood movie costs but thankfully the directors decided to cut the costs and maintain the quality. Afflicted is the story of two friends on a trip to Europe. While at a party, one of them has an encounter with a stranger that leaves him with a mysterious ailment. Things really start to take a turn for the worse in Afflicted. As things get continually worse and worse for the characters, the movie starts to get better and better. Amazon Prime movies rarely have the amount of creative camera work that Afflicted does. Everything is done from the perspective of his friend videotaping the events that occur. I guess it’s technically a found footage movie, but Afflicted is much more than that. You’ve got a front-row seat to the horror that unfolds in front of your eyes. I’m actually not much of a fan of found footage movies, but I found Afflicted to be done perfectly and it remains to be one of the best movies on Amazon Prime right now

Swiss Army Man

Swiss Army Man had me hooked in the first 15 minutes. It has one of the most ridiculous scenes I have ever seen, straight out the gates. That was all it took to know I was going to add it to my Amazon Prime movies list. Swiss Army Man is the story of a boy shipwrecked on an island when a mysterious thing floats onto shore and provides him with all the necessary tools he needs to find his way home. A lot of critics claim Swiss Army Man is too grotesque and disturbing. I wouldn’t say that it was “too” grotesque and disturbing, but I would say that those two words are accurate descriptions! I can honestly say I haven’t seen a movie with these “type” of disturbing scenes before, so maybe that’s why all the critics are so up in arms about it. I personally thought the so-called disturbing scenes were pretty funny! It takes a special amount of dark comedy humor to really get it, but if you are a fan of dark comedies, you’ll fit in right at home with Swiss Army Man. I really hope Amazon doesn’t decide to take this off of the Amazon Prime movies list anytime soon.

Into the Wild

Into the Wild is the true story of Christopher McCandless, who decides to leave behind all materialistic things to live alone in the wilderness of Alaska. As Into the Wild goes on, you can just feel how Christopher McCandless is slowly but surely pulling back from the world around him. The most interesting part of the story to me is that he came from a privileged life and still just wanted the simpler things in life. Into the Wild has great characters at every turn and you can tell McCandless had a lot of connection with everyone he met, he just needed to go his own way. If you're looking for a great true story about life, this is one of the best movies on Amazon Prime right now for you. Into the Wild can also be seen as a cautionary tale about the spiritual decisions people make in their lives. The best movies on Amazon Prime have a little bit of everything and Into the Wild is a perfect choice of movie to watch tonight. You will find a lot of laughs, a lot of love, and a very interesting look into the mind of a man who decided he would take complete control of his own life, down to the last detail.

The best movies on Amazon Prime right now are tough to find. I’ve found that the reviews aren’t much help in finding anything worth watching. Right now, Amazon Prime movies are taking a backseat to other Amazon programs, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a great source of movies in the future. Even though there are not that many good titles to choose from right now, the movies above are definitely some of the best movies on Amazon Prime. I will continue to update my Amazon Prime movies list whenever I find something good so make sure to check back here for the latest and greatest!
