Sundance Film Festival
The Sundance Film festival takes place in Park City, Utah and is a major hub for the best up and coming movies. All genre's of movies appear at Sundance, and the only difference is they aren't the typical turn and burn movies Hollywood seems to churn out on a daily basis. Movies that make it to Sundance has been screened for their talent of directors, originality, and many other factors that ensure they are interesting, often thought provoking, original films. Netflix actually looks at new movies that show up at Sundance and they buy films that they think will be good to add to the Netflix streaming list. If you're looking for what to watch on Netflix, today we'll look at some of the best movies on Netflix that made it through Sundance and are now available on Netflix streaming.
I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore
When you first see the trailer, or read a review of I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore it comes off as a dark comedy that seems quirky but fairly harmless. The description of "harmless" couldn't be further from the truth. It starts with the main character of the film in a battle against the frustrating lack of decency in the world. Like I've mentioned in other reviews, we can all relate to the stress of dealing with people that disregard the well being of others on a daily basis. That's just a part of a typical life on earth. What isn't a part of a typical life is dealing with a brazen daytime home invasion, seeking revenge of stolen goods, and the situation spiraling out of control into a bloody mess. See what I mean? You wouldn't expect that just by glancing at a quick trailer of I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. Trust me, knowing this doesn't ruin anything about the movie, I'm just trying to give you that extra little push to take a chance on it. It's on my list of best movies on Netflix 2017 and is a great addition to Netflix new releases.
Dope
Dope is the story of friends growing up together sharing a bond over 90's hip hop and a chance meeting of a neighborhood drug dealer that sends them down the path of being trapped in the criminal world. The first thing that I liked about Dope is that it restored my faith in understanding the youth. I'm only in my mid thirties, but I'm already starting to see the great divide between understanding the younger generation from the eyes of the older generation. It must be because I was a 90's kid and these kids in Dope loves 90's hip hop like I do but it extends even further than that. The film has a sharp, thoughtful, approach in every decision the characters make and even the older generation can relate to the decisions they are forced to make in every predicament they get in. Another great thing about Dope is that is breaks all the stereotypes of young minorities. I get so tired of seeing the same stereotypical roles that Hollywood seems to force actors to take. In Dope they use these stereotypical attitudes to shape the decisions the kids must make of either leading an intelligent successful life, or straying down the path of ignorance for a quick buck. Good Netflix movies are hard to find, and it's even harder to find ones that connect the old and new generations.
Tangerine
Man, Tangerine is a hand-full. A good Netflix streaming list has got to have originality, and Tangerine really takes the cake. The whole premise is so foreign to everyday life and I think that's what makes it engaging to watch. The main character shines as if she isn't even acting. With Tangerine you get to watch Sindee romp through the grease lined streets of L.A. in search of a pimp she feels betrayed her. The whole movie delves into the dirtiest and most unsavory lifestyle of street life but in a funny, personal way. I think a lot of people might consider Tangerine to be "offensive", but like I always say, there's things that go on in the world that exists whether you know it or not, so why not be open minded and know about it? Although, there is one seen that was incredibly revolting, so yeah, I understand if that scene is a little off-putting!
Welcome to Leith
Welcome to Leith can easily send chills up your spine. I mean horror movies are great, but there's nothing like a real life horror movie that could actually come true. Craig Cobb is such a deviant, disturbed, horror person, that you find yourself wanting to grab a pick fork and joining the mob of Leith residents to run him out of town. Obviously the craziest part of Welcome to Leith is that this could actually happen to anyone. I can't imagine having to deal with neo nazi's legally taking up residence in mt town and trying to recruit members. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't find this movie interesting, albeit unsettling. My Netflix movie list is better with this one. Unless, you know, you're a brain dead neo nazi.
Umrika
Umrika almost seems anti-American when you first watch it. You get the idea that they are complaining about how the world see's America as the land of opportunity and the best place in the world to live. Which it is, but Hollywood does paint us with a brush of invincibility and a type of arrogance that can sometimes be wrongfully shown to foreign audiences. Umrika doesn't really mean to come off that way, it's just a story of loving the land that your from and finding the best of any bad situation. It's a fun tale of adventure and longing to find a place to call home. The whole premise of Umrika is from the eyes of people that glamorize America without ever setting foot here. I've never liked that stigma we have, but it is interesting to see it from a different view. Unfortunately, I guess that's just how you fan the flames of Hollywood.
Finder Keepers
Finders Keepers is a great addition to my Netflix movies list. I haven't seen a stranger movie this year. Finders Keepers is the story of a man who lost his leg, the man who found the leg, and the legal battle that ensues. I mean who would have thought this story could actually be real? More than the ridiculousness of the story is the funny attitudes and opinions from both sides of the men fighting over the leg. As crazy as it all seems, I guarantee you will find yourself sucked into this one before you know it. There's a lot more depth to this story than you realize at first glance which was a pleasant surprise. I love stranger than fiction movies and I think you'll enjoy this one.
I've found that Sundance movies are some of the best movies on Netflix. Now that Netflix Original movies have really picked up the pace, I'm hoping that Netflix will still take the time to invest in Sundance. It's not a guarantee, but if a Sundance award winner hits Netflix streaming movies, you can feel confident it will show up on my list at some point.
