Good Movies on Netflix 2017 (so far)
So far, I think 2017 has been a pretty good year. I would say my Netflix list has grown a lot this year too. 2017 was the year that I realized that Netflix Original movies could actually be good. It's like they started out thinking that we would just love anything that they tied the name "Netflix" to, and then they just churned out a bunch of crap movies. But once they picked up steam and cut through the crap, it was clear that they were actually on to something. In fact, my first movie on this list of good movies on Netflix in 2017 is one such Netflix Original that is near the top of my list of Netflix movies for the year. Besides that one, I have two others that should help you find what you need when looking for the best this year had to offer. So here are some good movies on Netflix from 2017, so far.
I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore
The first thing I noticed with I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore was that besides Frodo (Elijah Wood), there's a lot of unknown actors that bring a lot to the table. Come to think of it, Frodo actually plays the weirdest character in the movie. Everything starts out plainly enough with the same storyline of the main character being fed up with the world and deciding to do something about it. But don't think that's all that's in store with this one. I don't think you will see how dark it can really get. I think most of us can relate to dealing with the people of the world that drive us crazy. I often have found myself wondering what makes people rude or annoying, or just generally incapable of mixing well with the general population. Either it's nature or nurture, but there's just some type of people that will drive you up the wall. That's her breaking point in this movie, and things really just spiral out of control from there. This is another great Netflix Original movie that gave them some legs to stand on. I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore is the first movie I've seen in awhile that really threw a wrench in the general storylines you see today. I bet you will be surprised at what's to come. All the characters are eccentric in a way, but have some realistic characteristics that clash throwout the movie. I particularly liked the twisted, and pretty sick, band of criminals. They really come off as unhappy, want to see the world burn, type of people. This movie was the first of 2017 to make my Netflix list and it's still going strong.
Win It All
Talk about the highs and lows of degenerate gamblers! I guess that's the name of the game with most types of addictions, but with gambling I always felt like the money aspect of it all really put a twist on things. I can't imagine the feeling of constantly going back and forth with the thoughts of: "Life is great with all this money!" to "Life is horrible with all this debt". Money problems are NEVER fun, and people with gambling addictions must know it better than most. Eddie is clearly a personable character and a funny guy so you definitely feel for him a little bit. But man, just like anyone with an addiction, it can be so frustrating to watch! I really liked how his family was his rock that constantly tried to help him out and get him out of his rut, because it's pretty accurate for the effects of addictions on families. His brother in the movie is an actor I'm sure you've seen before, and he always brings a lot of laughs. If you want to make it on my Netflix list you don't have to be an Oscar worthy movie. I can't tell you that you're going to see a life changing film with Win It All, but I can promise you some laughs and good entertainment for a few hours.
Take Me
Where do I start with Take Me? It's such a ridiculous type of premise that you just have to accept what's happening I guess. Don't get me wrong, I liked it. A lot of good Netflix movies can be considered ridiculous these days. You can always tell that a movie is going to be good when you're watching it with someone and both you stop talking about 2 minutes it. It must be the strangeness of it all that draws you in and keeps you watching. It's the second Pat Healy movie I've added to my Netflix list after Cheap Thrills and I hope to add a few more with him. I've read a few reviews about people saying it's too off the wall, or unbelievable for them. What I would say to those reviewers is to lighten up and don't take yourself so seriously. In my opinion, a Netflix movies list should have every type of movie possible no matter how crazy the plot is. Take Me is a nearly impossible premise, but who cares, sometimes we need that absurd type of movie that throws us off a little bit. I never take myself too seriously, and I find it's a lot easier to enjoy a movie that way. I like Taylor Schilling (Orange Is The New Black) and I started to realize that she takes on some quirky roles and pulls them off. It's never easy to make a totally random movie work, but both actors managed to make it fun. I personally enjoy dark, screwball types of comedies, and if you do too Take Me is for you.
So there's the best movies on Netflix for 2017 so far. I really hope that there's a few more good Netflix movies this year, but at least we're off to a good start. Unfortunately for us movie watchers, it seems like Netflix is slowly but surely transitioning into more series heavy content and my Netflix list has taken a beating for it. I do enjoy some series, but I would really like to see them step it up with movies in 2017. Good news is it's still early in the year for some quality movies to make their way to us. Thanks for stopping by and making sure to check out my posts from years prior if you're looking for some more options!
