Fantasy Movies on Netflix

I love watching a good fantasy movie on Netflix. Nothing clears your head after a bad day than to watch a movie that is just pure imaginative thought. I know I know, that's deep coming from me but I really mean it. If you're watching an action movie, there's a possibility that that scenario has actually happened in real life and it might actually bring up some negative feelings you remember experiencing. If you're watching a really sad drama, it just might remind you of that really sad time in your life and keep you thinking about it instead of unwinding for the night. That's just not the case with fantasy movies. With fantasy movies, you get to just sit back and enjoy the story that's unfolding in front of you. That's because there is no way that this scenario could ever happen. You don't have to relate this story to anything in your life, all you have to do is open up your imagination and let the story sink in. Today we're taking a look at the best fantasy movies on Netflix and I have a feeling this will be just what you need to put your mind at ease.

The Hallow

Starting off this list is The Hallow. What separates The Hallow from the rest of the fantasy movies on Netflix is that it's a backwoods horror fantasy that focuses on the Irish folklore of monsters. I can honestly say, and I'm guessing you can too, that I don't really know anything at all about Irish folklore. But what I can say is that I love good movies about folklore and urban myths. Sometimes I feel like those genres fall a little more into the category of horror or thriller, but if you think about it, the fantasy genre fits into all of them too. The Hallow is the story of a family that moves out of the city into a remote house in Ireland. What starts as a new beginning for the family, quickly turns into a nightmare. One of the most important things fantasy movies on Netflix need to have is originality and I don't think I've seen a more original and weird story coming out of Ireland. Something interesting to note is that the story is based on the Irish folklore that stems from mystical lands being guarded, as these are the natural habitats of mystical creatures. Citizens of Ireland dare not enter or disturb these lands in fear of retaliation from these creatures. I don't know about you, but I think I'd be just fine letting the creatures keep their natural habitats to themselves. Because after seeing this movie, the last thing I need in my life is to experience this horrible nightmare.

The Wailing

Ah yes, The Wailing. The Wailing enters the realm of fantasy movies on Netflix in probably the worst way possible. The Wailing is the story of a mysterious sickness plaguing a small rural village. As law enforcement tries to come to grips with the problem, a stranger becomes the focus of the investigation. I say the worst possible way because it delves into the fantasy of black magic and evil spirits. I don't know about you, but if done well in a movie creepy evil spirit stuff really sticks with me afterward. I remember seeing The Babadook for the first time and that really left a mark on me. If you haven't seen it yet, please check it out. The similarities between these two movies lie in the fact that you can't really understand this type of evil and you will always fear what you don't understand. Just like The Hallow, The Wailing is deep-rooted in mythology and rituals, although I was unable to find the true roots behind them. Nevertheless, The Wailing fits in as one of the best fantasy movies on Netflix with its mix of religion, spiritual forces, and the downright terrifying imagination of the director. Beware, once you watch The Wailing, it might stick with you longer than you expected.

Baskin

There has been a lot of complaints about Baskin being too brutal and grotesque for some people. Personally, I specifically choose movies that are labeled brutal and grotesque, but hey, that's just me. There are actually people that are a little less uptight and they labeled this a great horror. I'm ok with Baskin being labeled this way, being that one of its categories is in the horror genre. What I don't like is that no one talks about how Baskin is one of the great fantasy movies on Netflix. Nearly the whole time you are jumping in and out of a dreamlike sequence that has you wondering just what the hell is going on. Baskin is a story about policemen investigating a distress call at a home. Once inside they quickly find themselves lost in a subterranean labyrinth of horror. I considered Baskin to be one of the best fantasy movies on Netflix right now because it makes you watch the entire movie inside your head. What I mean is that you will doubt what you are seeing is real and you almost fall into the positions of the characters. It's a great, albeit gruesome, ride and Baskin definitely should not be missed if you can stomach it. And if you're ready to delve into the mind of a madman, then you are ready for Baskin.

John Dies at the End

John Dies at the End will really test your ability to keep up with all the multilinear timelines that take place. There's a new drug named "Soy Sauce" that hits the street and it will have everyone's mind drifting into a new dimension. Fantasy movies on Netflix should be mind-blowing right? And it doesn't get more mind-blowing than taking drugs and seeing outside of the realm of linear time and instead, seeing time existing in all spans at once. Sound a little confusing? That's because John Dies at the End is a very strange movie. But like all good fantasy movies on Netflix, it will have you thinking about what you just saw and how it plays into the timeline of the movie. I guess that way, they actually do get you thinking in a non-linear time frame. Besides fitting into the fantasy genre, I'd say that John Dies at the End actually has a little bit of horror and lots of drug abuse to keep you even more entertained throughout the whole movie. I mean, Paul Giamatti is onboard. That means you literally can't go wrong with this one.

Fantasy movies on Netflix can really ease the pain of your boss making you stay late on Friday or your five thousand dollar mechanic bill that popped up with the check engine light. Plus, I think we could all use a break from the monotony of the same old story that's been done a thousand times.
